This word is used to mean that something is tightly closed so that air cannot get in. It derives from Hermes Trismegistus, a Greek god creator of alchemy. In fact, he's the association of the Greek god Hermes and of Thoth, the Egyptian god of writing and science. He was able to magically seal a treasure box in a way that it could never be opened. Much later, in the 17th century, the word hermetic began to be used in English to refer to secrets or things that were sealed. After that, the term 'hermetically sealed' appeared as we know it today.
