Tennis
This word comes from the Old French tenez!, which means "take! hold!" and is the imperative form of the verb tenir (to hold). During the 14th century, the players would say "tenez!" to the opponent when hitting the ball. At that time, the players would strike the ball with the palm of their hands, and in fact the name of the game was la paulme (the palm). However, it was commonly called tenez, which was later introduced into English as tennis.
