Jaywalker
The word jaywalker appeared in 1917 in the United States. It makes reference to jay, a slang word meaning 'a stupid person' or 'dumb, inferior'. Therefore, somebody who stupidly ignored traffic regulations was called a jaywalker. Nowadays, it is used to refer to a person who walks across a road at a place where it is forbidden or dangerous to cross. The verb is to jaywalk.
