The pet of my home

My pet is a dog. My wife says he is very crazy but I defend him. For me, he is very smart, because he starts crying when he sees me from the distance.
How does he realize that it is me? How does he know that this is the car of his owner?
In our case, there is another car in the neighborhood that looks exactly the same, including the color.
When I get home and get off out of the car, he always smells inside the car and later smells me also too, maybe looking for something to eat.
He is always hungry and he gets angry when he's visited by other dogs or strange animals.
