This word comes from the Latin papyrus, which in turn derives from the Greek word papuros, the name of the Cyperus papyrus plant. The pith of this plant was used in ancient Egypt to create the papyrus. When paper was invented in China, it was named like this in reference to the old papyrus, although the process to create it is completely different.
