This word was first used in 1847 by American physician and missionary Thomas Staughton Savage, to describe the animals found in Liberia. The term is derived from the Greek word gorillai, meaning "tribe of hairy men", which was used by Hanno, a navigator who traveled across the NW coast of Africa around 480 BC.
