STORYTELLING
This is a very simple technique to make EVERY student speak in the class.
The idea is to create a full story. You start by saying an introductory sentence that motivates the students' imagination.
Then, in turns, each student will add one full sentence that makes sense with the story. They can invent whatever they want (kids love this!) and it's a great method to make them think fast and improvise in English. Make sure they follow the correct original tense: if the story is in the present or the past they should use that tense.
You can also record on tape the whole activity and then, make the students listen to it and write it down (to see if they can understand when other students speak).
Here we provide some introductory sentences that will help you put this activity in practice:
- It was a lovely Summer night in Lake Michigan and we were ready to start our trip back home...
- It was a horrible Sunday afternoon when I received a call from my friend telling me that the concert had been cancelled...
- We were about to begin our holidays, but suddenly the car broke down...
- Today it's my birthday, so I'm going to invite all my friends home...
- That morning I didn't want to go to school...
- This is the most fascinating journey we have ever made...
- I was waiting for my friend in the park when it began to rain very hard...
- We were in a fancy restaurant last night and suddenly all the lights went out...
