Learn English with Raiders of the Lost Ark
In this section, we analyze parts of the movie script to learn and understand the use of daily English language.

Read the passages and try to understand them. Then, read the vocabulary explanation. Finally, read the passage again.

MARION: I'll tell you something, Indy. I've learned to hate you in the last ten years. But somehow, no matter how much I hated you, I always knew that someday you'd come through that door. I never doubted that. Something made is inevitable. Why are you here... now... tonight?
INDY: I need one of the pieces your father collected.

I'll tell you something	Te diré algo. Es una forma de introducir algún comentario o una opinión. La estructura del verbo to tell es to tell (somebody) something o bien, to tell something to somebody. El verbo to say, que también significa decir, tiene una estructura diferente: Nunca puede estar seguido de la persona, to say something. to learn to do something	aprender a hacer algo
to hate somebody	odiar a alguien. El sustantivo odio se dice hatred.
in the last ten years	en los últimos diez años
somehow	de una u otra manera
no matter	no importa. Por ejemplo: 'No matter how you do it, just do it.' significa 'No importa cómo lo hagas, simplemente hazlo.' 'No matter what he says, I will do it.' significa 'No importa lo que él diga, yo lo haré.' 'No matter when, just come.' significa 'No importa cuándo, simplemente ven.'
to come through the door	atravesar la puerta
to doubt something	dudar de algo. También puede decirse to be in doubt. Una duda se dice a doubt. Doubtful significa dudoso. Otras expresiones relacionadas: 'There is no doubt of something' (De algo no cabe duda), 'to cast doubt on something' (poner algo en duda), 'beyond doubt' (fuera de duda), 'if in doubt' (en caso de duda).
to collect something	coleccionar algo. Una colección se dice a collection.

Look, you don't know how glad I am to see you. And I don't like doing this.

INDY: Look, you don't know how glad I am to see you. And I don't like doing this. But the whole thing will be shot if you don't just sit here quietly. They haven't hurt you in the last twenty-four hours, they aren't going to start now. I'll be back to get you in no time.

to be glad to do something	alegrarse de hacer algo
to like doing something	gustar hacer algo. Por ejemplo, 'I like going to the cinema' significa 'Me gusta ir al cine.' Note que este verbo es seguido del gerundio (-ing).
the whole thing	todo. Whole significa entero. Por ejemplo, the whole day (el día entero).
to shoot	disparar. Recuerde las formas del pasado: shoot, shot, shot.
to hurt	doler. En las formas del pasado permanece invariable: hurt, hurt, hurt.
in the last twenty-four hours	en las últimas veinticuatro horas
to be back	volver
in no time	inmediatamente, enseguida

EATON: I thought we answered that. It's someplace very safe.
INDY: That's a powerful force. Research should be done.
EATON: Oh, it will be, Dr. Jones, I assure you. We have top men working on it right now.
INDY: Who?
EATON: Top men.
INDY: We may be able to help.
EATON: We appreciate that. And we won't hesitate to call on you.
MUSGROVE: Thank you all. Thank you again.

ark	arca. El Arca de Noé se dice Noah's Ark.
safe	seguro. Existe en inglés la expresión safe and sound que equivale a 'sano y salvo'. También es común escuchar el proverbio 'Better safe than sorry', que equivale al español 'Más vale prevenir que curar' o a 'Hombre precavido vale por dos'. La palabra safe como sustantivo se usa para referirse a una caja fuerte.
a powerful force	una fuerza poderosa
research	Como sustantivo significa investigación. El verbo to research into something significa investigar algo. También suele usarse la expresión research work, trabajo de investigación.
to assure somebody	asegurar a alguien. Las expresiones 'you may rest assured that…' o 'let me assure you that…' equivalen a 'tenga la seguridad de que…'
top men	los mejores hombres
to work on something	trabajar en algo. Note el uso de la preposición on.
right now	ahora mismo
to be able to do something	ser capaz de hacer algo
to hesitate to do something	dudar, vacilar, no decidirse a hacer algo
to call on somebody	pasar a ver a alguien. Se refiere a una visita corta.
